JUPITER RESEARCH FORECASTS 2006 DELIVERY FOR NEXT GENERATION OF WINDOWS, CODE NAMED - LONGHORN

(New York, NY - August 20, 2003) - Jupiter Research, a division of Jupitermedia Corporation (Nasdaq: JUPM), today released a report on Longhorn, the code name for the successor to Windows XP, predicting that it would likely launch later than currently expected and will not be generally available until 2006. Microsoft had planned to release Longhorn in 2004 but more recently pushed delivery to 2005. The Jupiter Research report explores reasons for the later-than-expected delivery and offers Microsoft partners and competitors insight into how best to deal with any Longhorn delay.

Longhorn is scheduled to come with a radically new file system that Microsoft claims will simplify the finding of everyday information. Jupiter Research believes the file system change is significant enough to warrant a protracted testing period to minimize potential compatibility problems with older software. Microsoft is also developing Longhorn versions of all its major products, targeted to ship approximately the same time as the operating system. Both of these factors will contribute to the delay.

"Given that Microsoft is developing not just one but many Longhorn products, we don't expect this next version of Windows to be generally available until 2006," said Jupiter Research Senior Analyst Joe Wilcox. "Microsoft will also want to give software developers and end-users time to prepare for the new file system," added Wilcox.

The report indicates Jupiter Research's belief that the consumer and business transition to Longhorn will be protracted through at least 2009. The report concludes that slowly growing XP business sales and new Windows Media Center versions would maintain Windows, PC and third-party software sales until Longhorn ships.

The report is part of the new Microsoft Monitor service launched by Jupiter Research last month. A unique new service, Microsoft Monitor helps vendors prepare for market opportunities created by new Microsoft initiatives. The service also helps enterprise users understand which strategies are most successful in dealing with Microsoft and how to best exploit the customer relationship. The service uses consumer and executive IT surveys, online analysis, case studies and usage models. Clients of the service will discover which areas of Microsoft are most likely to succeed in capturing the marketplace, how these technologies will be deployed and how to effectively deploy them, complement them or compete with them. The service's companion Weblog is at www.microsoftmonitor.com.

The complete findings of this report are immediately available to Jupiter Research clients online. For more information on the report or Jupiter Research's Microsoft Monitor research service, please contact Kieran Kelly at 1-800-481-1212 or [email protected].
